John "Jack" Cloninger

When I was about to graduate from law school, my father asked me one day how things were going. I told him I thought I would enjoy being a lawyer, but I was concerned because everyone was telling me there were already too many lawyers, particularly in Asheville and Western North Carolina. My father then gave me the best advice I ever had on the subject. “Don’t worry about that,” he said. “If you work hard and do your job, you won’t need to worry about getting business. People will always need good lawyers and they will find you.”

He was right.

I started my career as a trial lawyer in 1981 after obtaining my law degree from the University of North Carolina. That first year, I tried three jury trials and have since tried more than a hundred. I have been a named partner in a law firm since 1985. My practice areas include personal injury, medical malpractice and complex civil litigation – including serious personal injury, wrongful death, construction law, insurance law, products liability and fire cases. I have had a rating of AV from Martindale-Hubbell – a peer review measure of very high ethical standards – since 1995.

I am past president of the board of directors of Asheville Community Theatre and am president of my homeowners association in Reems Creek. I attend First Presbyterian Church in Asheville and have been active in teaching Bible study and serving on committees. In my spare time, I enjoy golf and more golf and Panthers football when they are winning.
